Key Job Duties:

  • About 40-45 hours per week
  • Write 7+ articles per week (3,500+ words total)
  • Initiative: Writer generates at least three new (localized) story ideas per week that he/she will cover
  • Take photos to accompany majority of stories (or make “pull quotes,” fact boxes, etc. to illustrate stories)
  • Take stand-alone “wild art” photos as needed — Experience with Photoshop, Lightroom or other photo-editing software is a plus
  • Take photos and/or wWrite stories for several special sections, including county stock show, National FFA Week, visitor’s guide magazine, city festival, hunter’s edition
  • Assist with page layout — InDesign experience is a plus
  • Pitch in to help us meet publication deadlines (Monday and Thursday at noon)
  • Some night and weekend work required
  • Post breaking stories and photos to newspaper website as needed

Key Topics You Will Cover:

  • Lampasas and Lometa school districts — including feature stories, photos and coverage of each district’s monthly school board meeting
  • Human-interest features
  • Public safety — including coverage of major fires, crashes, crimes and court cases
  • Kempner city government — including twice-a-month City Council meetings
  • Agriculture
  • Lometa city government — including monthly City Council meeting


  • Paid time off after 60 days of employment; PTO increases w/ tenure to max of 4 weeks/year
  • Health and dental insurance

  • 8 paid holidays per year
  • Mileage reimbursement for out-of-town assignments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and three to five years of journalistic experience.

Minimum Qualifications

  • If you have some journalism experience but less than three years’ worth, we’d like to talk — as long as you are ready to hit the ground running!

  • Only want to focus on a narrow journalistic beat (Our reporters write about a variety of subjects.)
  • Struggle to develop your own hyper-local story ideas
  • Lack follow-through
  • Rush through your work and don’t focus on the details
  • Aren’t interested in writing detailed stories with multiple local sources per story
  • Don’t want to live in/near Lampasas, Texas
  • Are not willing to work nights and weekends as needed
  • Want to write fluff pieces or tons of “gotcha” exposés
